I've heard some stories from digital nomads who were drugged prior to the thief using their thumbs to unlock their phones, particularly in Medellin. Love the CryptoCat shirt! I made some shirts with the Anarcat logo, which is also my icon.
Adding to that, I don't recommend using a PIN for your every day life. There's a documentary of how attackers can see you unlocking your phone, then drug you, and then using that PIN to unlock your phone, change the password and log you out of your other devices. I don't how if Apple now requires the old password to set up a new one, that's the only effective way to protect users against such attacks. The other recommendation was setting up a different pin for sensitive apps like messaging and banking.
